PREVENTIVE CARE
Splints & Night Guards
Protection splints, also known as night guards, help prevent further tooth wear caused by grinding or clenching outside of normal chewing. At Grange Road Dental, we use our Trios intraoral scanner for comfortable digital impressions and our on-site 3D printer to create custom-fitted splints that are comfortable and long-lasting.
Protection splints, otherwise known as night guards, are an important way to prevent further tooth wear when it is happening outside of normal chewing function. Grinding or clenching your teeth, particularly at night when you cannot control it, can cause significant damage over time. A well-fitted splint acts as both protection and a habit breaker.
At Grange Road Dental, we make comfortable, long-lasting splints using our Trios intraoral scanner for digital impressions. There are no messy moulds involved, just a quick, comfortable scan of your teeth. This digital approach gives us highly accurate impressions for a splint that fits precisely.
We also have an on-site 3D printer, which means if you lose or break your splint, we can produce a replacement quickly using your existing digital scan. You get the same quality without the wait, and without needing new impressions.
The process is completed over two visits: one for the digital impression, and a second to deliver and fit your splint. We check the fit carefully and make any adjustments to ensure you are comfortable wearing it. Most patients find that after a short adjustment period, their splint becomes a natural part of their nighttime routine.

PATIENT EXPERIENCES
We value the trust our patients place in our team. Here's a selection of feedback from people we care for in Ipswich.
How do I know if I need a night guard?
Common signs include waking with jaw pain or headaches, noticing wear on your teeth, or a partner hearing you grind at night. Your dentist can also identify signs of grinding or clenching during a regular check-up. If you are unsure, we can assess your teeth and advise.
What happens if I lose or break my night guard?
Because we take digital impressions, your scan is stored on file. Our on-site 3D printer means we can produce a replacement quickly using your existing scan, without needing new impressions. You get the same quality without the wait.
How long does a night guard last?
With proper care, a custom-fitted night guard can last several years. The lifespan depends on how heavily you grind or clench. We check the condition of your splint during regular appointments and can advise when a replacement is needed.
Will it be comfortable to wear?
Our splints are custom-fitted to your teeth using accurate digital impressions from our Trios scanner at Grange Road Dental in Ipswich, so they fit precisely. Most patients find that after a short adjustment period of a few nights, their splint becomes a natural part of their routine.
How are the impressions taken?
We use a Trios intraoral scanner, which takes a digital scan of your teeth. It is quick, comfortable and there are no messy impression moulds involved. The scan also means we can reprint your splint in the future if needed.
